How to Clean Your Cowhide Rug
Cowhide rugs are naturally hard-wearing. The better you care for them, the longer they last. Follow these simple steps to keep your rug looking pristine.
* Regular Maintenance: Shake out your hide regularly or use a standard vacuum to keep it completely free of dust and particles.
* Balance the Wear: Periodically rotate your rug on the floor to ensure even foot traffic across the surface.
* Moisture Rules: Cowhides do not like damp conditions. Never soak your hide or put it in a washing machine. If it gets wet, place it in the sun with the underside facing up to air dry.
* Keep the Hair Soft: Brush the hide with a hard plastic brush to straighten the hairs and redistribute natural oils, keeping the skin soft and glossy.
* Handling Spills: Soak up liquids with a sponge or paper towel immediately. Gently scrape away solids with the blunt edge of a knife in the direction of the hair. Rub with a mild soapy solution until clean.
* Stains & Greasy Marks: Scrape off solids like fat, grease, lipstick, or chewing gum using the blunt side of a knife. Apply Eucalyptus oil or white spirits to a cloth to wipe away the remaining residue.
